ST-5 Structural Timber Model

The focus of the project is on optimization of computer based cooperation between design and fabrication of timber structures. This will not only reduce the number of errors, time and cost but will also meet customer needs far better and more specifically than in the past. The project greatly benefits from long term experience of its members in the fields of integrated data exchange from design through to production lines.

Solution:
The goal is the development of a complete, internationally recognized and accepted data sharing/exchange standard, which supports automatic exchange between architecture, technical installations (building services), structural analysis, structural design, fabrication and erection. Coordination is supported by the extended IFC object model, which allows:
  • Identification and description of existing elements from architectural and building services (HVAC design and electrical installations)
  • Sharing data among different "timber software applications" for design, detailing, bid preparation, material calculations, automated fabrication and other relevant part of the process

Scope of work:
In Scope:
The scope of the ST-5 project is the support of the communication between the architect/project coordinator, the structural engineer (with reference to the other project participants) and the fabricator for timber constructions using different software systems.

In particular the ST-5 project supports the following features:
  • structural timber members and architectural components (including cross section, material, strength, thermal, moisture and vibration insulating properties, )
  • structural connections and joints
  • information for automated production control
